Federal Laws and Regulations

Federal laws and regulations apply only to nursing homes and the people who live in them. For laws and regulations governing the operations of Assisted Living Facilities, check the appropriate state laws and regulations.
The Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program began as a part of the Older American’s Act of 1965. The laws and regulations for this federal program apply to all people living in nursing homes and assisted living facilities and, in some states, people in home and community-based care.
